The ISMR study on implant retained facial prostheses in burned children is intended to examine the use of implants and facial prostheses in children with extensive burns. To date, reconstructive efforts have been limited to using autogenous tissues to reconstruct ears, noses, etc. These methods are frequently unsuccessful in burn victims. However, typically the facial bony skeleton is uninvolved in the original burn injury and can provide an excellent platform for osseointegrated implants. Children from around the world will participate in this study conducted at Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to continue to promote the art and science of maxillofacial rehabilitation throughout the world. Continuing education is essential in this endeavour and allows our members to stay current with advances in our specialty. The ISMR has recently helped to establish a clinic devoted to Maxillofacial Rehabilitation in the region of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. This hospital is the major provider of health care for this under-served region. Cancer surgery and radiation treatment is available, but no rehabilitation services were provided. Funds were donated to establish an outreach clinic in this hospital to care for the rehabilitation needs of these patients. Under the guidance of recent ISMR President, Professor Giulio Preti, the faculty of the University of Turin (many who are ISMR members) will donate their time and provide the necessary services. Over time, appropriate dentists in the Puglia region will be recruited and trained to provide simple and straightforward care. ISMR doctors will assist with the triage of patients and prepare them for a team of specialists from Turin. Our team will be led by Dr. Gianfranco Gassino and will provide the necessary care on a periodic basis. The hospital has a dental clinic but is lacking necessary maxillofacial specialty supplies and equipment. The ISMR is honored to have donated funds for supplies and materials, transportation and appropriate equipment items. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the University of Turin, our dedicated members in Italy and enhancing such facilities dedicated to maxillofacial rehabilitation.
