The ISMR in association with the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India conducted a maxillofacial outreach and educational program from December 14th through December 16th.  This program was funded and sponsored by the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation.  The Organizing Secretary of this joint meeting was Dr. Kanchan Dholam, the Director of Maxillofacial Prosthetics at Tata Memorial and a member of the ISMR.  Her dedication and details to organization was monumental to the success of this program

The seven international speakers consisted of Dr. Khim Hean Teoh of Singapore National Cancer Centre, Dr. Harry Reintsema of Groningen University of the Netherlands, Professor Gianfranco Gassino of the University of Turin, Italy, Drs. Eleni Roumanas, John Beumer and Bhavani Venkatachalam from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Dentistry, and Dr. Ian Zlotolow of the University of Pacific School of Dentistry, San Francisco, California.  All the speakers shared the podium with presentations covering the topics of maxillary defects and rehabilitation, tongue-mandible defects, soft palate and velopharyngeal restorations, facial defects, implants for the head and neck cancer patients, fabrication of ocular prostheses, and management of the irradiated patient.

Over 145 participants attended (dentists, graduate prosthodontic students, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, head and neck surgeons, laboratory technicians) and asked pertinent questions after each session.  One of the highlights was a Tumor Board Conference, where the dental-maxillofacial faculty of Tata Memorial presented live telecast of 10 patients in various stages of restoration of their cancer dysfunction and/or facial deformity to the auditorium.   The panel of ISMR faculty offered opinions of “what we would do at our institution” to maximize quality of life via prosthetic and surgical care.

The exchange of information was much more valuable for these patients and knowledge for the local attendees in the audience than any textbook could present.  Each attendee received a DVD written by Dr. Beumer and his faculty from UCLA adding to the didactic art and science of maxillofacial prosthetics.  In addition, laboratory demonstrations using audio-vision from the dental laboratory to the auditorium, with constant feedback from the audience to the technicians, was incorporated in this Outreach Program.

Tata Memorial Hospital is one the most surgically involved hospital in the world that treats oral and head and neck cancers.  Over 4,000 head and neck patients are treated at this hospital each year.  It is situated in the heart of Mumbai with over 18 million residents.  The Tata Memorial Hospital is truly dedicated to maxillofacial rehabilitation with a dedicated team of surgeons, radiation oncologists, chemotherapists, pathologists, diagnostic head and neck radiologists, and social services.

Tata Memorial Hospital provides cancer care to all individuals regardless whether they can financially afford treatment.  Our gratitude and extreme thanks go to the faculty and staff of Tata Memorial Hospital, the attendees of the conference and to the Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation for providing the funds to sponsor this ISMR Outreach Program and we look forward to future collaboration with our colleagues in India.
