Thailand August 13-17, 2005

ISMR volunteers visited the Mahidol and Chulalongkorn Universities, Bangkok Thailand to present lectures, review case presentations, educate maxillofacial residents and provide patient services to patients.

Our ISMR volunteers were Drs. John Beumer, Eleni Roumanas and Ting Ling Chang from UCLA, Maxillofacial Department & Weintraub Center for Reconstructive Biotechnology; Dr. Salvatore Esposito from Cleveland Clinic Maxillofacial Department; Dr. Arun Sharma from Prosthodontic Department, University of California San Francisco; Dr. Khim Hean Teoh from Department of Restorative Dentistry, National Dental Centre, Singapore; and Dr. Gianfranco Gassino from Clinica Odontostomatologica, University of Turin, Italy.

Our hosts included Dr. Benjapote Yotnuengnit (2005 President of the Asian Academy of Prosthodontics) and Dr. M.L. Theerathavaj Srithavaj, both from Mahidol University, and Dr. Pravej Seerichettaphongse from Chulalongkorn University.  Young maxillofacial students presented their maxillofacial cases for comments and guidance.  Our volunteers were very impressed with the students' professional work and, most importantly, with the emphasis placed on "teamwork".  We found that our colleagues in Thailand worked side-by-side to help each other in every aspect of patient care.  One of the primary goals of the ISMR is focused on the "importance of teamwork" and our colleagues in Thailand are keenly aware of this priority.

Many of the patients we saw were sent to the university maxillofacial department from a wide variety of oral care and surgical practices.  It was obvious to the ISMR volunteers that there was an urgent need to educate the "maxillofacial team" in providing standards that best facilitate successful prosthetic rehabilitation.

There are a variety of maxillofacial challenges in Asia.  Our Thailand institutions are keeping up with this constantly evolving field and the new technologies being made available for patient care.  The many patients that were present confirmed what we all know to be universal with maxillofacial rehabilitation... "Teamwork" between the surgeon, prosthodontist and anaplastologist is essential for successful quality of life results.

Six days of lectures and patient services were provided by our ISMR volunteers.  Their dedication and willingness to help the advancement of the art and science of maxillofacial rehabilitation throughout the world is greatly appreciated.  The ultimate goal is to help educate our international colleagues so that patients around the world will benefit, greatly improving the quality of life for those who unfortunately require maxillofacial rehabilitation.
