Elective Social EventsReturn to Conference Program ScheduleReturn to ICMP Conference PageTorino Museum TourThursday, June 18th (1:30pm - 5:30pm)This tour will begin with a visit to the Egyptian Museum, founded in 1824 by Carlo Felice after his acquisition of the collection from the French Consul General of Egypt in the early 19th century. It was the first major Egyptian museum to be founded anywhere and is the second most important in the world after the museum in Cairo. It boast over 30,000 items which provide an overview of Egyptian art, history and daily life. Two important excavation campaigns have largely enriched the museum. There is a statuary art section with the statues of Ramses II and Queen Nefertiti. The Schiapparelli wing contains the Rock Temple of Ellesya (15th century B.C.) donated to the museum by Cairo and reassembled in the Sixties. The Royal Palace, one of the most beautiful residences in the world, was planned by Amadeo di Castellamonte in 1646. For more than two centuries it was rearranged in successive stage by the court architects (Juvarra, Alfiere, Vittone, Pelagi). The French architect Le Notre designed the garden in 1697. The inside is luxuriously decorated with inlay-work, stuccos, frescos, gildings, tapestries. Outstanding painted ceilings by Joan Miel, Daniel Seyter, Claude Dauphen and Francesco Beaumont.
Country TourSaturday, June 20th (1:30pm - 5:30pm)A half day tour of the Torino countryside will begin with a visit to Susa, in spite of its relative small size, Susa has a rich artistic and historical heritage to offer. It was called "the Key of Italy" for the important role it played in ancient times. The August Arch (I century B.C.) elevated by King Cozio I to celebrate the alliance with the Roman Emperor Augustus, is the most ancient and best preserved witness of the Roman era. Near the Castle are other fascinating landmarks of Susa. During a brief stroll through it tiny streets, you will pass by the San Giusto Cathedral, founded by Olderico in the XI century and the Santa Maria delle Grazie Chapel (XVII cent. A.D.). Sagra di San Michele, placed on the top of the Pirchirianc mountain between the Susa and Sangone valleys, not far from Lake Avigliana. The Sacra di San Michele is an awe-inspiring and picturesque sanctuary, first built in the year 998 and restored a number of times up until the 15th century. Originally inhabited by five Benedictine Monks, the sanctuary soon became one of the major monasteries in Europe. Left ruins, the sanctuary underwent restorations during the last century thanks to the House of Savoy and still conserves its air of imposing austerity. The monasterys facade, 123 feet high, is quite impressive, and allows the visitor to enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Susa valley from the adjacent terraces.
